Captain Francis “Frank” Butler’s Portrait Hanging

The portrait of Capt. Butler of the 5th NH, Company K was hung in the State House on 12/3/2021 in a ceremony led by the Joint Legislative Historical Committee and the Captain’s family. The unity provided a color guard for the State House portrait unveiling event.

Captain Butler was from Bennington, NH and during the war received a Red Star signal flag from General McClellan for extreme bravery for his actions at the Siege of Yorktown. Only three such flag were reportedly given in the army. He was wounded at Petersburg, VA on June 30, 1864 and died a month later at the young age of 22.
