In 2007 the headstone of Sergeant Phelps was stabilized, sealed, and cleaned after having snapped in half at some point. This was able to happen due to the generosity of the Amherst New Hampshire Historical Society , Wilderness Systems Group (Jon Platt) of Connecticut, Vermont Hemlocks, Sons of Union Veterans, the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States (MOLLUS – Jerry Carroon), 5th New Hampshire members and other donors. Due to the fundraising a reserve fund was established for future care of the headstone.
